Shanal lost her mother one month after delivering she was delivered due to health complications associated with being HIV positive/AIDS. Thanks to the doctors who helped deliver Shanal, she was born without AIDS. Nobody knows the whereabouts of her father. Her uncle Ebong has been her caretaker since her mothers’ death. Ebong is very poor and could not provide enough financial assistance to take care of her and send her to school.  He was recommended to BKU home and his request to help care for Shanal was considered.
